What is History?

Measuring Time

Throughout the Middle School, History focuses on key skills. Put a copy in yout file and keep referring back to it.

History is about the study of the past. In order to study the past we need to be able to go back in TIME! Time is really a measurement, so HOW is it measured?..

You will recieve a copy of this grid for your books. Your teacher will indicate your achievements in the skill areas whenevre you complete some assessed work or tests.

Most of our history studies are easily measured as they are all in 'AD' years. Still, it useful to understand 'BC and 'AD'....

Use this timeline...look at a book in the library or an online website to write a summary about one event in history. You need TWO piecs of detail to say about the event. Include a picture in your work to create a full class wall display. Use the timeline panel to help organise your ideas. This is an ASSESSMENT on CHRONOLOGY

How do Historians find out about the past?

People who study and write about History are historians (Therefore your are already an historian!) But as they are not present when past events happened, how do they work out what happened and all the other interesting questions like why?

Work through the powerpoint exercises together to find out why historians are really detectives!! Then try the source grid work...

Now it is your turn to become detectives. There's a body! Is it murder? Just WHO is in the grave? You must look at the evidence, analyse it and reach your conclusions. This is an ASSESSMENT on HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION

Historians will use written evidence when it is available. Look at the information on who was Herodotus, then complete the source evaluation. This is an ASSESSMENT on EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS

What is Archaeology?

What is Archaeology and process diagram. Your teacher will give you a cut-up sequence to organise in your books. Watch the two video clips to see HOW Archaeologists excavate!

THE DIG! Archaeologists believe they have found an ancient site.... YOU must excavate the site:

- use the tools to carefully remove layer by layer, noting any finds on the grid and on the layer diagram.

- bag your finds then later draw one of them in more detail, find out more about them, put photos onto your diagrams and write up your dig diary.
